Groundwater measurements

Groundwater on your site
The height of the groundwater on your site affects the type of foundation and how it is constructed. You can measure the groundwater level with a groundwater measurement. The measurement results allow the engineer and architect to work on the foundation design.

We measure the groundwater level in a piezometer or in the CPT hole.

-
Groundwater measurements in a piezometer are very reliable. Because they are conducted over a longer period of time and are not affected by factors such as sudden extreme rainfall.

-
Groundwater measurements in the CPT hole are a snapshot. Therefore, they are less precise.
Why measure the groundwater level?

With high or fluctuating groundwater levels, sometimes additional foundation measures are needed, such as a watertight basement or a pile foundation.
A groundwater measurement helps to assess the risk of settlement, especially in soft soils such as soft clay or peat.

Are you planning to dig a basement or install a swimming pool? Then it is best to know beforehand whether groundwater is expected. In that case, dewatering may be necessary, which entails additional costs and permits.

How is the groundwater level measured?

During the soil investigation, we always measure the groundwater level. This is included in your soil investigation. The measurement is taken in the unprotected CPT hole, the hole that is left behind after the CPT.

Do you want to monitor the groundwater level over a longer period? Then we recommend a groundwater measurement in a piezometer.

This allows you to map fluctuations per season, during wet and dry periods. Measuring groundwater in a piezometer is therefore the most reliable and accurate way to get a clear picture of the groundwater level.
Is it mandatory to measure the groundwater level?

It is not always necessary to measure the groundwater level, and it is generally not mandatory. Mandatory or not? That depends on your provincial, city, or municipal regulations. Does the groundwater on your site need to be temporarily lowered? In that case it is mandatory to have a groundwater measurement with a piezometer done.
